A Perfect Nook in Ericeira, Portugal

February 5, 2016

Less than an hour away from Lisbon lies the coastal town of Ericeira. Once a quiet fishermen’s town, Ericeira has become a popular surf destination in recent years and one of the main stages for Portugal’s summer music festivals.

As for me, though, what I love most in Ericeira is how close and far away it can be from Lisbon at the same time. The 50km drive is over and done with pretty quickly on the highway, which means I can escape there regularly. But as soon as you land, you instantly feel you are a world away from the capital. The busy streets are replaced with a peaceful silence. The chaotic traffic is left behind as most people get around here just fine on their own two feet. And the endless concrete skyline becomes a sprawling view of the ocean.

I definitely don’t escape to Ericeira as often as I’d like, but this month I was able to get away for a day. It was cold and windy and even rainy at one point, but I found solace in a perfect little nook I discovered.

Close enough to the beach that you can hear the ocean waves, but far enough away that the strong winds don’t bother you, KFÉ Coffee Shop is a paradise for coffee-lovers. Freshly brewd coffee (with beans that are ethically sourced, might I add) is available all day long with some delicious treats on the side. KFÉ does everything from breakfast to dinner beautifully (covering brunch too) and its interior décor is just an added bonus that will make you want to stay for hours.

I spent my afternoon here, with the boyfriend, eating a very delicious cream cheese bagel (he, of course, splurged on some pancakes with Nutella). We looked through photos from the day, chatted about our plans for the future, and got caught up on the news all bundled up while it poured outside.

Eventually, the rain stopped. It was time for us to leave. The boyfriend reluctantly got up and I trailed behind begrudgingly. We walked silently back to our car, both already dreaming of the next time we would be able to come back.

Running a quick Google search, I actually found out the coffee shop is owned by The Lovely Bay – a company that also owns a very adorable lodge in Ericeira. Check it out here!

What’s the best place you’ve discovered recently? Where do you like to go when you need a quick getaway?

[…] I’ve said this before, but I can’t stress enough how much I love Ericeira. It’s the perfect beach retreat to get away from the city madness and I would even reccommend staying for at least a couple of days. But if you’re cut for time, a day excursion will suffice to make you fall in love with Ericeira. […]
